Connected Devices: Extending Service Provider Visibility Into the Last-mile Network

Connected Devices

Test Suite

Explore the Connected Devices tests.

Quality of Experience Tests

Test real application performance over real infrastructure.

In-home Measurements

Passively monitor performance to Internet-enabled devices in the home.

Quality of Service Tests

Measure service performance, including speed, latency, loss, and jitter.

Quality of Service Tests

Measure service performance, assessing a variety of metrics including speed, latency, loss, and jitter.

Speed Tests

Speed is a key selling point for service providers, so it’s crucial to evaluate it using diverse methods.

Speed tests

TCP Speed Test

Our standard speed test, used on Whiteboxes, CPEs, and mobile apps.

Hardware-accelerated UDP Speed Test

This speed test uses specific Broadcom and Qualcomm hardware to measure extremely high speeds.

Lightweight Capacity Test (UDP)

An alternative speed test that is ultra-lightweight in terms of bandwidth usage and time.

WebSockets Speed Test

A WebSockets and XHR-based speed test for use in web browsers.

Latency, Loss, and Jitter

Latency, packet loss, and jitter impact everything you do on the Internet. Assess and optimize performance with these tests.

Latency, loss, and jitter

UDP Latency and Loss

Our standard continuous latency and loss measure, used on Whiteboxes and CPEs.

Contiguous Latency and Loss

An enhancement to our standard latency test that tracks outages and disconnections.

Latency and Loss Under Load

Measures round-trip working latency, which is more representative of actual Internet experience, and often much higher than idle latency measurements.

UDP Jitter

This test helps assess voice over IP (VoIP) call performance by connecting to the SIP server and sending a request and response to obtain bi-directional data on loss and jitter.

DNS Resolution

The Domain Name System (DNS) converts a hostname (such as www.example.com) into a computer-friendly IP address (such as 192.168.1.1). Every time a user wants to load a webpage, this translation must occur. The DNS resolution test measures how long this process takes. It’s configurable and can test against a target DNS server, over UDP, or DNS-over-HTTPS.

Voice Over IP (VoIP)

The voice over IP (VoIP) test gauges call quality between your device and a nearby test server, revealing how well your broadband handles VoIP calls.

Voice over IP (VoIP)

Traceroute

Traceroute maps your traffic's journey from source to destination.

Quality of Experience Tests

Test real application performance over real infrastructure.

Video Streaming Tests

Measure how video reaches your customers using tests that stream content from top providers, such as:

  • Netflix
  • YouTube
  • iPlayer
  • Hulu
  • Multicast IPTV
  • Shahid
  • Generic HLS/DASH streaming test

Game Store Tests

Modern console games are streamed from online stores like Steam, Xbox Live, and PlayStation Network, often using hundreds of gigabytes. Performance can vary widely depending on the ISPs used and the location of the CDNs that host the games. Monitoring the performance of game stores is critical for capacity planning and real-time monitoring, particularly around major game launches or updates.

Get insights on performance with game store tests, such as:

  • PlayStation Network
  • Xbox Live
  • Steam

Gameplay Tests

Measure network performance with gameplay tests targeting the infrastructure supporting popular online games, such as:

  • League of Legends
  • Dota 2
  • EA SPORTS FC
  • Fortnite
  • Apex Legends
  • Heroes of the Storm
  • Diablo III
  • Diablo IV
  • Roblox
  • Overwatch 2
  • Among Us
  • Counter-Strike 2
  • PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds
  • PUBG MOBILE
  • Hearthstone
  • World of Warcraft
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • VALORANT
  • Rocket League
  • StarCraft II
  • Call of Duty: Warzone/Vanguard
  • Gears of War 5
  • Halo Infinite
  • Battlefield V

Video Conferencing Tests

Measure round-trip latency and packet loss to top video conferencing services. Our tests target video and audio relay servers, spotlighting connectivity and quality issues.

  • Webex by Cisco
  • Google Meet
  • GoTo Meeting
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Skype
  • Zoom

Social Media Tests

Measure the round-trip latency and reachability of a selection of major social media services, taking into account different endpoints that the social media service may use for different content types.

  • Facebook
  • Facebook Messenger
  • Instagram
  • Instagram Messenger
  • WhatsApp
  • Snapchat
  • X (formerly Twitter)

Content Delivery Network (CDN) Tests

CDNs supercharge web load times by delivering content close to users, easing server strain. Top CDNs embed caches within ISP networks, keeping traffic local for faster access.

Use CDN tests to measure the performance of various leading CDN providers, such as:

  • Microsoft Azure
  • Cloudflare
  • Apple
  • Amazon AWS
  • Akamai
  • Google
  • Alibaba
  • Tencent
  • Fastly

Web Browsing

Load real pages from real websites to assess the browsing performance that users would experience in their homes rather than just testing performance to a centralized test server.

Web Browsing Lite

Measures the time taken to fetch the HTML and referenced resources from a page of a popular website.

In-home Measurements

Internet traffic moves through multiple networks, but a single broken link can disrupt the entire service chain. Home network issues are common yet underreported. Connected Devices in-home tests bridge that knowledge gap.

In-home Tests

Passively monitor performance to Internet-enabled devices in the home with in-home tests.

  • Data usage
  • Device link speed
  • Device latency
  • Device signal strength
  • Channel occupancy
  • Device disconnections
